Exploring Wiang Kum Kam Again

Wat Nanchang

The third site at which we stopped is Wat Nanchang, sometimes written as Wat Nan Chang. Unlike many of the other signs with historical notes and descriptions in Thai and English, this sign only announces the site.

Wat Nan Chang, like its neighbor Wat E Khang, is one of the most significant excavation finds in Wiang Kum Kam. The temple ruins were buried 1.8 meters below modern ground level and provide clear evidence of at least 2 distinct periods of construction. The bases of several structures were uncovered here, so this was a densely built temple grounds. This first view is of the end of the excavation site where the foundations of several structures are present.

Another view of the ruins at Wat Nan Chang. Notice that the ruins are below the ground level outside the excavation site. This view is a more spacious part of the temple grounds. Also, note parts of what was likely a wall around the temple.
