What is a Soi?

In more than a few of my blog posts, I refer to smaller roads that are called a “soi.” I have described a soi as a small road, larger than what we think of as an alley, but smaller than a street, a lane, perhaps. In the U.S. we do not use “lane” very much to describe small streets. Walking back from The Artisan after my exploration of the Hai Ya Sub-District and discovering more of the Kamphaengdin, I noticed the soi signs with the translation there in front of me all all the time I have been visiting Chiang Mai:

Sign for Wua Lai Road Soi 4. The translators used by the sign maker here call it a lane.

Mostly, though, the signs say, in English, “Soi.” Here is the sign for Prapokkloa Soi 4, where I turn to go to Wild Rose Yoga (Wild Rose Yoga is on Prapokkloa Soi 4/1, sub-soi 1 off soi 4):

And The 3-Sis is on Prapokkloa Soi 8:

And, since I was taking pictures of signs, the new sign for The 3-Sis was installed just yesterday:

Does this mean that the renovation is complete? No, there is still much to do and contruction continues every day. The renovation is coming along well and looking better every day.
